For many of us, the will to exercise is there, and you know you can fit a workout into your work day (bike to work, lunch break office workout, active meetings, etc.) But there’s one big roadblock: how to freshen up after exercise if your office doesn’t have a locker room. We get it – not only is working while sweaty and smelly just plain gross, it can also be damaging to your job and professional reputation.
But with careful planning, we can change this imposing barrier into a small speed bump. Incorporate these five tips into your post-workout routine to return to your desk fresh and clean.
1. Pack a separate exercise outfit.
This one might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many folks exercise in their work and everyday clothes. A less obvious point, though, is to store your work clothes in a clean, dry place while you exercise – NOT in your gym bag.
2. Pack more than one towel.
This may be another no-brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning. Pack at least two towels: One for wiping off sweat during your workout, and at least one for drying off afterward.
3. Use no-rinse body cleansing towelettes to de-funk.
Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting using Clorox Disinfecting Wipes on your pits. If you haven’t yet come across these at places like Target or drug stores, there’s a great selection of body cleansing towelettes in many pleasant-smelling varieties specifically for freshening up any time, any place. Once you’ve cooled off and dried down after your workout, a once-over with these will leave you feeling and smelling freshly showered.
4. Polish your hair and face.
Once you’re sufficiently scrubbed down, wash your face with your facial cleanser of choice, redo your make up and/or any other daily routine face care. As for your hair, quickly blow dry to get rid of any lingering sweat, then spray with a dry shampoo and style as desired. If possible, keep your hair up and out of your face during and post workout up until this step to minimize sweaty locks.
5. Finish with a touch of perfume, cologne or body spray.
A touch. Sweat plus a dousing of cologne or perfume does not equal pleasant odor. Instead, take the time to properly clean up then add a spritz of your favorite scent.
BONUS TIP: These methods are also great during long travel stints! Keep these items in your carry-on or purse/briefcase for a quick boost during a layover or stretch break at a rest stop.
